The Movie Council
This is the first year we asked attendees to join our movie council and pick the movies for next season’s CineArts Festival.
With more and more people coming and some even wanting to be on the council next year, we thought we’d share the details, qualifications, and selection process for everyone.
GENERAL INFORMATION
- The Movie Council will have a total of six (6) members.
- The Emerit members, is/are the CineArts Festival host(s), will have lifetime positions on the Movie Council.
- The Director members, are members at large, will have a position on the Movie Council for the upcoming CineArts Festival season.
- A CineArts Festival season is from May to October of any year. This may be changed by a supermajority vote, four (4) members, of the current years Movie Council members.
- The Movie Council will meet in March of each year.
- Dinner will be provided to all Movie Council members by the Emerit members.
- Two months of the year will have set genres. June will have a LGBTQ+ themed movie and October will have a Horror themed movie.
- Each Director will be responsible for nominating a movie for a month in which they represent. Representation of each month will be determined by a lottery for the months of May, July, August and September. Directors may, among themselves, exchange months in which they are to represent.
- Each Director should bring at least three (3) movie suggestions to the Movie Council for the month in which they represent.
- It is recommended that any movie that is being suggested should have at least been seen by the Director suggesting the movie or by any other Director on the Movie Council.
DIRECTOR QUALIFICATIONS
- Attendance to each CineArts Festival event will be recorded by the Emerits.
- Attendance record will be made available upon request.
- Attendees can appeal their own attendance record to the Emerits by providing substantial proof of their attendance.
DIRECTOR SELECTION
- A Director will be selected for the next CineArts Festival season based on prior years attendance to the CineArts Festival. Example is that for the 2026 season, attendance records from the 2025 season will be used.
- Attendees with the highest attendance record will be self-nominated to become a Director.
- Any attendee that has been notified by the Emerits to become a Director for the next season, may opt out of being a Director.
- Emerits will notify attendees of the self-nominated position to become a Director by November 31 of each year.
- If there are more qualified attendees than positions available, then the attendance records for the past two years will be merged and used to determine qualifications.
- If there are still more qualified attendees after the attendance records have been merged, then the names of all qualified attendees will be put into a lottery and names will be drawn by the Emerit members. Each Emerit member will draw two names from the lottery.
